Description:
The site is characterized by a swamp and peatland complex contained within a relatively steep-walled valley dominated by disturbed, late-successional hardwood forests of Sugar Maple, Yellow Birch and Eastern Hemlock. [Brunton 1993]
|
Vegetation:
The wetland, likely partially maintained by beaver damming activity, contains open thicket swamp of Speckled Alder and willow grading into Tamarack forest with a dense undergrowth of shrubby and herbaceous growth. A White Cedar - Tamarack stand covers the western end of the swamp forest. The peatland contains treed, open shrub and graminoid bog mats which are known to support a variety of uncommon peatland (usually fen) plant species such as Dragon-mouth Orchid (Arethusa bulbosa) and Grass-pink (Calopogon tuberosus). Lincoln's Sparrow, near the southern limit of its range, breeds here. The peatland is patterned in a parallel series of linear bog pools, a feature of subarctic fens which is rare south of the limit of permafrost. This is the only known patterned fen in the site district and one of very few in site region 5E. [Brunton 1993]

Landform:
The site is situated on Ground Moraine landform. [Brunton 1993]

Representation:
Graminoid, low shrub and treed peatland (bog and fen ?) with patterned areas; some unique wetland elements but also partially shares representation with Bear Lake Peatland, East River Delta and Sprucedale Bog Candidate ANSIs. [Brunton 1993]
