NHIC Data Sensitivity Training - Wasyl Bakowsky, 9/21/2006 10:13:05 AMData Sensitivity Training sessions are scheduled in the Peterborough OMNR office for November 6 and 7, 2006. Each separate training session is one full day, from approximately 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The registration fee is $50, to cover costs for the training manual, continental breakfast, lunch, and computer training room. Note that enrollment in each session is on a first come first serve basis. If you would like to sign up to take the training, email wasyl.bakowsky@mnr.gov.on.ca or call (705) 755-2162. Training is currently given to internal MNR staff that require access, as well as the staff of organizations that sign data-sharing agreements with the NHIC (e.g. conservation authorities, municipalities, non-governmental agencies, etc.). Upon completion of the training and signing of the data-sharing agreement, participants will be able to have full access to the conservation databases maintained by the NHIC. The Ontarians with Disabilities Act was passed in 2001 and the Government of Ontario has proclaimed that its internet sites will be accessible to persons with disabilities by January 1st, 2003. The NHIC web site has undergone a new look this past month to satisfy these ODA guidelines. Contact us with your comments about the new look of the web site. The Natural Heritage Information Centre (NHIC) is pleased to announce that Mike McMurtry has joined our team as the Natural Areas Ecologist. Prior to joining the NHIC, Mike worked as District Ecologist in Aurora District, where he was involved in a range of projects and programs including monitoring and recovery of species at risk, aggregate and peat extraction, and the Oak Ridges Moraine. Mike has also worked in aquatic ecology and assessment with the Lake Simcoe and Muskoka Lakes Fisheries Assessment Units. As Natural Areas Ecologist, Mike will be working with MNR program staff and NHIC Partners towards the identification and protection of natural areas in Ontario and managing the NHIC natural areas database. The latest version of the NHIC web site will be undergoing testing this month. When that is completed, this version will be launched in the MNR intranet.
