Species Information

Rare Species Reporting Form

Report a first-hand observation of a rare species. This form is to be used to submit records of provincially rare species (i.e. those tracked by the NHIC) from within Ontario. To determine if a species is tracked by the NHIC, refer to the species lists. A "Y" in the "Track" column indicates that a species is considered rare in Ontario and is tracked by NHIC.

Species List

Lists all species within the NHIC Elements Database. The list is sortable by different categories and alphabetically.

Search the Elements Database using keywords found in element names. You can use the percent sign (%) as a wild card character. For example:  turt%

Rare Species by Jurisdiction

Geographic Query

Natural Areas and Element Occurrence data can be accessed through the Geographic Query. Please read the instructions first. The MapGuide Plug-in (download a copy) is required to access this query. You can also download a shapefile of Rare Species occurrences.

Ontario Herpetofaunal Atlas

The Ontario Herpetofaunal Atlas (or Summary) (OHS) project began in 1984 as an attempt to consolidate existing information and gather new data on Ontario's amphibians and reptiles. The primary purpose of the OHS project was to produce detailed distribution maps of the province's amphibians and reptiles.
