Natural Heritage Information Centre
The Natural Heritage Information Centre (NHIC) compiles, maintains and distributes information on natural species, plant communities and spaces of conservation concern in Ontario. This information is stored in a spatial database used for tracking this information. The Centre also has a library with conservation-related literature, reports, books, and maps, which are accessible for conservation applications, land use planning, and natural resource management. The NHIC website makes much of this information available through the internet. To learn more about the NHIC please visit the About Us section of the web page.

Latest News...NHIC Data Sensitivity Training, Spring 2008.
Data Sensitivity Training sessions are scheduled in the Peterborough OMNR office for May 9 and May 12, 2008. Each separate training session is one full day, from approximately 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The registration fee is $50, to cover costs for the training manual, continental breakfast, lunch, and computer training room. Note that enrollment in each session is on a first come first serve basis. If you would like to sign up to take the training, email wasyl.bakowsky@ontario.ca or call (705) 755-2162. Training is currently given to internal MNR and other Ontario government staff that require access to classified data, as well as the staff of organizations qualified to sign data-sharing agreements with the NHIC (e.g. conservation authorities, municipalities, non-governmental environmental agencies). Upon completion of the training and signing of the data-sharing agreement, participants will be able to have full access to the conservation databases maintained by the NHIC.
